Google Ads vs. SEO: Which Should You Invest In First?

Both channels put you in front of people searching for what you sell — but they work very differently, and most businesses shouldn’t pick just one.

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from business owners: should I spend my budget on Google Ads or on SEO? The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and understanding that difference matters more than picking a ‘winner.’

Google Ads: speed

Ads put you at the top of search results immediately, for exactly the keywords you choose. That speed is valuable when you need leads now, are launching something new, or want to test which offers and messages resonate before investing further.

SEO: compounding value

SEO takes longer to show results, but the visibility it builds keeps working without ongoing ad spend. A well-ranked page can keep generating traffic for years, while an ad campaign stops delivering the moment you pause the budget.

The practical answer for most businesses

If budget allows, running both in parallel tends to outperform either alone — Ads for immediate demand capture while SEO builds toward long-term, lower-cost visibility. If budget is limited, we typically recommend starting with whichever channel matches your most urgent business need: speed, or sustainability.
